The residence permits of the special category can be granted for a maximum of one year. If the educational institution needs a longer residence permit for a foreigner, a renewal can be requested. The renewal must be submitted to the relevant foreigner authority not later than thirty days before expiration of the residence permit. The request should contain the following documents:

1. Request to the general manager, signed by an official representative of the educational institution or a deputy, specifying the reasons for the renewal of the special category. If necessary, the renewal must be described individually for each student or scientist. In the request shall be indicated a place within the legal district of San José or

2. Proof that confirms the payment for the document of the special category (article 249, migration law).

3. Receipt in favour of the government of US $10 for the issueance of the document which confirms the legal stay.

4. Receipt in favour of the government of US $10 for the renewal of the document which confirms the legal stay.
